Lamp of the Genie
You are told of a museum housing a genie’s lamp on display. Could it be real? Could your lifelong quest be at an end? As with all the other artifacts in this museum, it is indeed real. As one of The Membership, you must attempt to release all of the trapped enlightened genies and leave the lamp with treasure. But, the Chaotic One is there to block your way. Once inside you find a stunning and completely immersive environment. But alas, getting in was easier than you thought; getting out again, with riches in hand, is not so easy.
We have not yet completed a review of The Lamp of the Genie at Fantescapes in Guelph but we hope to complete this room soon.
What others are saying
Fantescapes in Guelph appears to have closed for good. Wanderlog lists the business as permanently closed, and Morty marks Lamp of the Genie as permanently closed. While it was open, the room got a mostly positive reception, especially from newer players and families.
Players loved the look of the place: colourful drapery, gold-accented furniture and plenty of trinkets in both the room and the lobby. Genies popped up on a screen to deliver clues, and staff spoke through the speakers in character to give hints, which players found immersive. Reviewers on Morty and Google praised the creative, well-thought-out puzzles, and appreciated the optional side puzzles that let less experienced players (and kids) contribute. Staff were described as friendly, funny and welcoming.
The most common caution was difficulty. Staff reportedly called it their hardest room, it leaned heavily on logic and riddles, and several groups ran out of time. One player missed story details while busy solving, and a family noted that a lot of the puzzles were done on the floor or on stools, which could be hard on your back (the venue is also down a flight of stairs). One group was disappointed they weren’t allowed to see the rest of the room after time ran out. A more critical Google reviewer felt the props were cheap and low budget, found the basement hot and humid, and disliked unrequested hints and a minute-by-minute countdown near the end.
