Nyctophobia: Fear of the dark

The current housing shortage in the city has made you consider a house in the country. Your real estate agent takes you to see the perfect bargain property – an abandoned home that’s been left in excellent condition. In fact, it’s almost like the original residents never left…

Are you brave enough to take a tour of this house? Can you find all the secrets hidden in the shadows before time runs out? Or do you suffer from Nyctophobia?

We have not yet completed a review of Nyctophobia: Fear of the dark at Omventure in Scarborough. We hope to experience this room soon.

What others are saying

Nyctophobia is played entirely in the dark, which makes it one of the most distinctive rooms at Omventure (formerly OMescape). Reception from enthusiasts is very positive, mostly because nothing else quite like it exists. It’s a horror experience, though, and definitely not for everyone.

People rave about the concept. The Esc-Room Analyst blog called it one of their favourites in the GTA: immersive, “flat out horrifying”, and driven by fear of the unknown, with an unsettling build-up that starts from the pre-game introduction and voices that haunted them. Players on the Morty app described it as thrilling, memorable and unlike any other escape room. They also mention lots of jump scares and loud noises.

The criticisms mostly come from the same thing that makes it special. Because you can’t see, the puzzles are fairly simple and can feel repetitive, and some Morty players said the novelty wore off partway through or that they missed having décor to look at. Esc-Room Analyst said it’s more adventure than puzzle game, and not ideal for beginners or easily scared players, who may be too frightened to contribute much. They also felt the ending could have been executed better. Other tips from players: keep your group quiet during narration, since at least one set of instructions doesn’t repeat, and know that it’s not well suited to people with mobility or hearing issues.
